The Lumsden Club is a group of female students who share a commitment to supporting women’s and children’s charities and promoting the arts within St. Andrews and abroad. We fulfill our aims through hands on charity work and by hosting fundraising social events throughout the university calendar.
The Lumsden Club is named after Louisa Lumsden (1840-1935), the first prominent female figure within the University of St Andrews. After graduating from Cambridge, in 1877 she became one of the chief founders and the first Head Mistress of St Leonard’s School. Five years later she became warden of the first residence for female students, University Hall. In 1911, she was awarded an LLD by the University for her active promotion and integration of female students, and was then honored with the title ‘Dame Commander of the British Empire’ in recognition of her services to female education. Her influence and achievements within the University, town and beyond inspired the founding of The Lumsden Club in 2001.
